PREMIERE | Sooner, "Meaning"
From the states of interpersonal and general disassociated confusions there is a quest for calm to quell the tempests that rage often beyond the boundaries of reason. Beyond the platitudes and clichés that echo that all things happen for a reason, the logical rationales for much of life's miscommunications and mayhem are somewhat obfuscated from plain view. Through the painstaking processes of soul searching and doing all the therapeutic work without allowing ourselves to get in the way of making strides toward progress and new tiers of understanding; a greater sense of peace and understanding can be ascertained and reclaimed from the fiery wreckages of fury that dots and mars the consortium of our fragile existence and corresponding discourse. Arriving at a place of clear vision and open expression brings an enlightened path toward greater substance, greater mental wellness, greater bonding, a greater appreciation for life, loved ones and an enriched echelon of self-esteem.
Ascending toward this conscious plane of empathy and light is Brooklyn’s Sooner, who present the mind and spirit illuminating message of “Meaning”. Featured off their upcoming album Days and Nights via Good Eye Records, Federica Tassano leads the band toward places of heart in measures and musical movements that bridge those distorted divides that create conflict. The track mixes atmospheric arrangements that soar through the ether and spheres of the ephemeral that arrive into the clamor and consciousness of earthen confrontations in ways that feel visceral like an ecstatic awakening of a stubborn spirit from within.
“Meaning” sings out like a morning lark delivering the song of a bright new day from its perch on an NYC aboveground and overhead utility cable. Fabrics from the formidable pillars of ephemeral gazing icons past can be heard in echoing throughout the mix, as Tassano and crew muse about the malaise of nothingness in pursuit of something substantial and striking (with a windswept element of the surreal, like discovering cohesive logic within a dream-like state that otherwise makes little to no sense). Sooner present the mesmerizing “Meaning” like a latent wish for something more in our lives. Something that sets out for a higher place of cognition. Something that brings about a satisfying return on our humble investments. Something more than this. Something that delivers with the force of a deeply felt desire merging into the cold concrete lanes of reality. Something that manifests goodness from the liminal URL spaces, into to IRL places. Something that breaks through the digital pale and into brick and mortar actualization. Something meaningful. Something we can believe in whole heartedly again in a world proselytizing disinformation and their miscreant prophets of misinformation. “Meaning” is a gorgeous and humble plea for greater truths in a timeline satiated by the corrosive empty calories of fallacies, false flags, blinding smoke and fun house mirrors.
Sooner’s Federica Tassano provided some insights on the new track “Meaning”:
This one was also a new version of another song — “Mean” on our second EP, Stranger. Loved the chords of the original but wanted to have something more dynamic and faster. The studio was really fun for this too, trying to dial in the arpeggio & chorus effect perfectly, and getting to add elements like the Wurlitzer electric piano and go crazy with the guitar noise.
The lyrics were off the cuff and not intended to have deep meaning — but they revolve around knowing your bad qualities but wanting peace in a relationship.
Sooner ‘s album Days and Nights will be available March 25 via Good Eye Records.
