VIDEO PREMIERE | Becca Starr, "I Forgot"
We first discovered the Paisley/Scotland luminary Becca Starr with the breakout single "First Step" that centered the focus lens on making big moves, acts of courage, volition, ambition and self-examination. Expounding upon these tropes is the visual debut for "I Forgot", exploring aspects of identity as it pertains to the past, present with the purposes and impacts on how that effects the future. Featured off the forthcoming album Speak No Evil, Starr surveys through all of the things that make us who we are. It is a reminder to recall the things that make us. The people that influence our development. Revisiting our humble, formidable beginnings. Realizing we are not island, but we are our own person. Recognizing ourselves and not letting that vision of self and spirit slide out of view.
"I Forgot" jogs the mechanics of memory like a music box melded to a rhythm and blues engine. Becca Starr digs up all the emotively charged perspectives and perceptions that can be daunting where the forces of yesterday, today and tomorrow rage all at once. Ruminations of everything that are blocked out, put away on the shelves of the unconscious surfaces in a reckoning that faces the facets of reality for what it is, what it was and all it can be. Tenets of traumas are experienced like flashes of mental light, scouring through the scores of inner picture books from throughout the years that echo from the archives of all but forgotten anachronisms the paint hues of contemporary relevance through the processes of recollection. Becca centers their personal therapy session on the concepts of love, the desire to love and be loved in return. The sung and spoken reconciliations presents passages toward healing, where the scars from old wounds are seen as part of the fabrics and tissues that make the artist who they are, representative of where they have been, with lyrics on where they are now and where they want to go.
The video for Becca Starr's "I Forgot" blends home movies with modern day bedroom meditations, sorting through old journals and vibing in the studio. We see the artist through various stages of growth, from time with family, early youthful performances to being fascinated by Fraggle Rock as a baby while Becca sings out the hook that states the importance of connecting/reconnecting to your feelings and senses of self. "I Forgot" rolls the coming of age video reel spools that re-examines how we connect to the intricate aspects of our upbringing and how we discover meanings both great and small. Starr lyrically and visually pieces together the pieces of their past in a visual track that underscores the importance of leaning in and loving the nature of the person that we are, who we perhaps were and everything that we want to be.
