The way folks in our respective lives inspire and influence us is something of a sublime and cryptic code of indelible connections. Everything from speech patterns, interests that become shared items of intrigue, tastes in media, literature, music, film, art, civics and so much more feed into a larger conversation (both consciously and otherwise). These varieties of knowledge delve into a discourse that moves us in ways that we cannot always immediately define or describe, impacting our perspectives; sometimes for better, other times not exactly for the best. In the infinite dialogues of nature and nurture, we make a mimetic impression upon each other in ways where patterns and idiosyncrasies become imbued upon our own impressionable communities in the most peculiar of manners. Ideas, semiotics, sensibilities and so much more become shared in the things that beget trends, memes, fads, fashions, styles and all the things that contribute to the consortium of progress and tides of limitless change.

Indictive of this are Brooklyn’s own beloved Looms, who announce the upcoming The Dogs of Doubt EP with a first listen to the illustrious “You Already”. Bandleader Sharif Mekawy and company have endeared themselves to the world over the years with lauded releases like A Different Variety of Same, The Way Up, How It Has to Be, Sleeping Days and Waking Days specializing in a craft that stirs a familiar sense of warmth within the listener while entertaining echoes of an enlightenment that Looms prove to be self-evident. The Dogs of Doubt offers something to help us cope with a distressed world, a balm to keep us keeping on and believing in the beauty of the human spirit as we all strive to make sense of a world caught in the whirl of circling the proverbial drain.

“You Already” chimes with a sense of hope and inspiration. Sharif and the gang revel in those vestiges of intrigue that strike a chord somewhere deep within our spirit and mind. Conceptually taking off from the fascination of hearing a song that moves the soul in mysterious ways, expanding the lyrical lens from the micro to the macro. From focuses on the frustrations of just scraping by in life and all the trials and tribulations that arrive with existence; Looms finds a greater sense of truth in the cycles that spin like the flywheel of a carnival ride that turns and twists beyond our control. “You Already” blooms with a botanical sense of awe, anchored in the human experience and all of its polarities — good times, bad times, the people we love, friends, enemies, family, loved ones and everyone in between. As our summer fades to a close, Looms presents an anthem for navigating the autumnal solstice of change that allows us to hear and feel the visions of a larger picture that instinctively stem from intrinsic and intuitive bodies of knowledge that exist from within us all.

Sharif Mekawy shared the following reflections on the new track:

“You Already” was inspired by a new song one of my friends sent me. I was really moved by some of the words which catapulted this song into existence, and I tried to use the lyrics in a way that would relate to our personal relationship but also describe universal feelings we've all felt with different people in our lives.

Looms’ new EP The Dogs of Doubt will be available October 17.
