PREMIERE | Dorotheo, "Phases of the New Normality"

Like a beam of light shining across the westward skies, we announce the return of Dorotheo as they announce their upcoming album Como Es with a first listen to the electro psych wave signals of "Phases of the New Normality". The duo of Guadalajara, Jalisco and De Jefe's desperado vanguards Benjamín Zárate and Otto Malgesto emerge from the blistering gaze of a burnt auburn sun to present an instrumental epic of mind opening proportions to soundtrack the strangeness and cycles of modern times. Also featured on the upcoming BLM benefit Call & Response from Halfshell Records; Dorotheo chronicle their own creative evolution of arriving at become a two-piece from a quartet as they grapple with the externalities of our current common era propagated ad nauseam as the new normal.

Dorotheo’s “Phases of the New Normality” hums with a blend of motorik fusions that buzz, hum and flare across an astral plane of retro-futurism. Ben & Otto manage to bottle the weirdness, the fear, oppressiveness, danger and uncertainty of today’s fragile world and distill it into a heady Mexican western showdown of outlaws, aesthetes, heroes, villains and all the characters in between. “Phases” manages to bridge southwest psychedelia styles with eastern impressionistic overtures that conjure mirages of apocalyptic clashes between ancient and contemporary forces playing out on an absurdists stage. Dorotheo’s latest track hits with the deep subconscious burrowing energy of an ayahuasca trip that reveals the past, present and future for what they truly are — an ultimately fully inconceivable time construct that teeters on the brinks off the temporal and the infinite.

The Dorotheo duo described the new album Como Es with the following:

Como Es is an album that concerns itself with the theme of uniqueness and transience ofeverything, existential questions that question our time in this life. It was a different process than what we had before in terms of writing new songs. We had so much freedom. The most essential part of the work was to be careful not to lose the essence of the band.

Dorotheo’s Como Es will be available soon and the single “Phases of the New Normality” will be featured on the upcoming Halfshell Records compilation Call & Response available October 31. The comp is part of a mutual aid fund in support of the Black Lives Matter movement dedicated to racial justice via music and art. All proceeds to be split evenly between NAACP, ACLU, National Bail Out, Okra Project, King County Equity Now, Real Rent Duwamish, and Border Angles.
