Memorable Meals with My Idea

This summer Lily Konigsberg (of Palberta) and Nate Amos (Water from Your Eyes) joined creative forces as My Idea, enchanting us with the fun, bright and rambunctious EP debut That's My Idea. Bringing together a variety of styles, tones, heartfelt intonations, privy expressions, humor and more; the duo painted a bouquet of pop botanicals that run the gamut from experimental beats, Top 40 affectations/aspirations, to the stripped down and earnest DIY dalliances of bedroom 4-track symphonies in just the span of five songs.

The old school minimalism style of recounting awkward situations and more rings out on the opener "I Can't Dance" that takes a stance on ballroom dancefloor obsessions. Employing the harmonic and real approach reminiscent of decades worth of college radio heroes, Lily and Nate create a tune that politely declines the advances of the fancy-footwork set and their peacocking penchants for cutting rugs, busting moves and so on. "Birthday" is a curious cut that blends a drum and bass approach to feathery new age tones that feels like a progressive techno ballad for the wallflower folks at the club. Truth and fallacies battle it out on "Keep Lying to Me" that operates on a glimmering aesthetic that would feel right at home on the stereos at both a humble vintage thrift shop or the most posh designer boutique imaginable.

"Stay Away Still" is a wildly catchy track that goes back and forth on the benefits of solitude and offers lyrics of endearment aplenty with memorable quips such as, ‘I don't really care about what people say about me, all I care about is animals, friends and family.’ The titular closer "That's My Idea" serves as the perfect distillation of the duo's sound and sensibility that squashes the clamor of conflicts with a strong sense of authorship, autonomy and authority that leaves you thirsting for a potential future full-length from one of the most exciting purveyors of pop to emerge out of 2021. Join us after the jump for Lily Konigsberg and Nate Amos' survey of culinary curiosities, insights and a whole lot more in a valiant effort to rewrite the Michelin Guide:

Memorable Meals with My Idea

Clams

On a journey to an east coast isle, Lily acquired a Clamming License from the Shellfish Constable. Expecting minimal to no success, Lily and Nate ventured into the shallow waters. While the two at first found nary a clam and many a crab, Nate’s ancestral instinct led him towards a certain posse of reeds where the two effortlessly harvested a bounty of clams, filling two buckets to the brim. They cackled with delight, as if they had been foraging for weeks on end. Lily emerging from the water with as many as six clams in each hand, Nate patiently and profoundly holding the buckets and trying not to step on crabs. They never found out why the crabs were so interested in Nate. With a little broth, butter, lemon, parsley, voila! The two agreed they’d never had a better meal.

Burritos from that place

Nate really fucking loves this taco truck on Broadway and Lafayette in Brooklyn. He likes the sauce, he likes the burritos, and from time to time will fetch burritos for himself and Lily on a nightly basis. Often, in the morning light thereafter, the two will sit quietly, interrupted only by Nate saying, I just can’t wait for the next one. Lily remains silent, though she agrees.

Sushi in Nate’s room

For a while after Nate got sober he became dependent on copious amounts of sushi and sashimi. From time to time, Nate and Lily will still sit on Nate’s floor, dust aplenty, in the brutal city heat, eating the raw fish, staring at each other and generally dissociating. They are happy. They are also on their way back to Brooklyn to do this at this very moment.

Gummy bears and M&Ms

One day while watching Agents of SHIELD (a frequent activity for My Idea) Lily remembered a favorite childhood combination - that of gummy bears and m&ms. She looked to the right — gummy bears. She looked to the left — M&Ms. She nudged Nate, who was absorbed in the night’s programming and probably high and instructed him to pop the two contrasting treats into his mouth at once. Nate, prone to food fixations, subsequently revisited this magic pairing on a nightly basis for realistically about a week. He kind of stopped, but also kind of didn’t. You should try it!

1 sesame bagel, 1 everything bagel

Often, by the time Nate and Lily are ready for breakfast, the deli near Nate’s apartment is nearly out of the bagels. Many times, there was only one sesame bagel remaining. They both love sesame bagels, but they are Lily’s favorite (and Nate knows this). Thus, Nate would procure one sesame bagel for Lily and one everything bagel for himself. Though it became canon, it was, at a certain point, interrupted by Lily’s move upstate. In the following days, Nate would continue to get both bagels, a creature of habit. He always ate both of them, alone. But don’t be sad dear readers, that’s Nate’s job. P.S. the two are definitely going to eat this meal tomorrow morning, together.

Butter chicken and naan in Nate’s room

Not much to say. A great experience, experienced by Nate and Lily many times.

Toast with smoked fish and cherry tomatoes in Lily’s backyard

Nate usually sleeps later than Lily, so Lily often has two breakfasts — one small before his little eyes open, and one large, after his little eyes open. One particular morning Lily prepared a simple toast with a layer of plain Greek-yogurt (in the absence of cream cheese) and a layer of smoked fish. They went to eat in Lily’s backyard where the two began slicing cherry tomatoes with their teeth, straight off the vine and placing them on the toast. A little foraging and a little fine-dining and one very happy meal for the goon and the hag.

Eggs in a basket

When Lily is sick or sad or grumpy, Nate will often make her eggs in a basket. You make a hole in the bread with a cup and put an egg in the hole. You save the hole-shaped bread and make it into a toast-hat for the main bread. It’s goofy and gross and cute and it works.

Cursed orange platter

Lily made this for Nate because it matched her hair at the time.

Mozzarella Moons

Nate and Lily were on the road. Lily, a New York City bitch, had never been to a Chili’s before and Nate thought that was cute. They couldn’t find a Chili’s, but they found a place that seemed comparable based on aesthetics and other variables, subsequently setting up camp. The food was all horrible, but the most horrible thing they ate were called “Mozzarella Moons”. They will never know why they ordered them, and they will never stop regretting the decision. Imagine mozzarella sticks, but way too big, shaped like moons, tasted like butts.
